Andrea Lovato is Full Professor of Institution of Roman Law in the Department of Law of the University of Bari (where he currently also teaches Legal Epigraphy and Historical Foundation of European Law), as well as a member of the Academic Senate of the same University. He is Head of Unit in various international research projects. He has organized a conspicuous series of Scientific Conferences and Seminars and has been a speaker at many Congresses held in Italy and abroad. He has published monographs and essays on specialized topics of ancient law, from criminal repression to the jurisprudential literature on the Antonine and Severan ages, from the history of the Roman historiography to legal epigraphy. Among his most important works are Il carcere nel diritto penale romano (1994); Diritto romano e scuola storica nell‘Ottocento napoletano (1999); Studi sulle Disputationes di Ulpiano (2003); Elementi di epigrafia giuridica romana (2006); Del buon uso del diritto romano (2012). He was Councillor for Culture, Library and Public Education of the Municipality of Trani from 2007 to 2011 and President of the Società Italiana di Storia del Diritto in the three-year period 2016-2019. He has currently been President of the Accademia Storico-Giuridica Costantiniana since 2018 and Director of the Department of Law of the University of Bari since September 2022.
